Adaptation After Relocation
Moving to another country – even if it is a conscious and long-awaited decision – is always accompanied by internal destabilization. Everything changes: language, culture, social codes, rules of interaction, rhythm of life.
Outwardly, it may seem that a person is coping, but inside there is a feeling of loss of support, identity, belonging.
Customers in this state often say:
- “I don’t feel there – neither there nor here”
- “It’s as if my whole former personality was null and nobody needed me”
- “I don’t know who I am in the new reality”
Adaptation requires not only the organization of life and legalization, but also deep internal restructuring – especially if the move was accompanied by the loss of a social role, language, profession, close environment.
Possible manifestations:
Physical:
- Tension, insomnia
- Energy reduction, lethargy
- Sleep and appetite disorders
- The feeling of a constant background of stress, ‘on the edge’
Emotional:
- Anxiety, irritability
- Feeling of loss of self, emptiness
- Emotional instability, vulnerability
- Apathy, unwillingness to ‘integrate’ into a new
- Feeling of loneliness even with contacts
Behavioral:
- Avoiding new social interactions
- The fluctuations between ‘build new’ and ‘surrender’
- Delaying integration into the local environment (language, contacts, professional activity)
- Sharp emotional reactions to everyday trifles
- Loss of interest in the future, the feeling of ‘survival’ and not life
How to work with it
Psychotherapeutic support when moving helps:
- normalize and understand adaptive reactions (including acute emotional fluctuations)
- to return the feeling of inner integrity and continuity: who am I here, who am I now
- restore contact with resources, habits, supports that can be transferred to a new environment
- reduce anxiety, restore the feeling of control
- build a sustainable, realistic and personal integration model into new life
It’s not just a ‘get used to a new place’ – it’s the creation of an inner feeling of the house, even if the external environment changes.
