Impostor Syndrome: How to Overcome It and Believe in Yourself

What It Is

Impostor syndrome is when a person is objectively successful, but inside feels: “I don’t deserve this, it’s just luck, soon I’ll be exposed.”
This state is familiar even to the most talented professionals.

Signs of Impostor Syndrome

  • Success is attributed to “luck” or “other people’s help”
  • Constant comparison with others
  • Fear of failure, even with high competence
  • Anxiety before new tasks (“I won’t manage”)

Why It Arises

Its roots often lie in childhood scenarios: high expectations, constant comparisons, or the belief “I must be perfect to deserve love.”
Later, this turns into a habit of devaluing one’s achievements.

How to Start Coping

  1. Track the Facts
    • Keep an achievement journal: record even small successes.
  2. See Results Through Others’ Eyes
    • Ask a colleague or friend what they value in your work. This helps you view yourself from another perspective.
  3. Allow Yourself to Learn
    • Mistakes are not proof of incompetence, but a natural part of growth.

How Therapy Helps

In sessions, we work with the beliefs that create the feeling of “I’m not good enough.” Step by step, you learn to rely not on the fear of being “exposed,” but on real facts and your own strengths.

For lasting change, several sessions are usually needed: the first already brings relief, but systematic work is what truly helps you believe in yourself.
